Our History

Equipped with an ever-increasing membership base, the Brunswick Hockey Club is fast becoming one of Victoria’s fastest growing clubs.

Since its creation in 1923, Brunswick has maintained high standards not only across hockey fields in this state, but also off the field where our committees have proven to be innovative, creative and forward thinking. Even after enduring some lean times, Brunswick has always managed to pick itself up where other clubs have fallen by the wayside, most notably when we survived a failed move away from our heartland in the early 1990s.

Over the last few years, Brunswick has developed initiatives that will be beneficial to the club’s longevity and competitiveness. After finally securing our own ground in March 2008 (which was relaid again over the summer of 2017), Brunswick has continued to grow. Since 2018 Brunswick has been named as either winner or finalist for Hockey Victoria Community Club of the Year and continues to cement itself as a club committed to contributing to the community it operates within.

We cater to the needs of hockey players great or small, young or old, and of varying abilities. We realise most people join a sporting club not only as a release from everyday stresses and to keep fit, but also to be entertained. That’s why Brunswick has a buzzing social scene, with regular functions being held at our field, Wylie Park clubrooms and several other nightspots in the surrounding areas.

At present we have one of our very best committees in place, with enthusiastic and innovative members devoted to improving all aspects of the club and continuing to steer Brunswick in the right direction into the future. We encourage the development of our younger members, continually having one of the youngest committees in hockey clubs across Victoria.

With some great talent coming through the ranks and many loyal and focused members, the Brunswick Hockey Club is only at the beginning of what may prove to be the most exciting and prosperous period in our 100 year history.

‘A Brief History of the Brunswick Hockey Club’

To commemorate the club’s centenary, club historian and life member, Noel Turner and fellow life member, Chris Zull, authored a 250 page book celebrating the storied history of the Brunswick Hockey Club. This book is a beautiful encapsulation of all eras of the Brunswick Hockey Club, detailing the club’s founding years, a string of premierships in the 1930s and also highlighting the incredible resilience of the club to come back from the brink of folding in the mid-1990’s to be the strong community focussed hockey club we are today.

Copies of the book are available for purchase from the link below. We encourage any past or present player and other members of the community to get their hands on this incredible piece of history.
